600 Congress
Schulte Roofing transformed the 600 Congress rooftop in downtown Austin, overcoming complex demolition and design challenges to deliver a fireproof, water-managed, architecturally stunning space that harmonized with the building’s rebranded aesthetic.
Background
Schulte Roofing was selected to execute a comprehensive roofing renovation for the prominent 600 Congress building, formerly known as One American Center, located in the heart of Austin’s downtown business district. This sophisticated project, completed in 2017 during the building’s rebranding, involved a complex rooftop transformation at level 26 of this iconic structure.
Challenges
Our team tackled multiple critical challenges, beginning with the careful removal of a non-structural concrete slab spanning approximately 3,700 square feet. Using specialized demolition techniques, we systematically cut and removed hundreds of concrete blocks while implementing a sophisticated roofing assembly featuring tapered insulation, modified bitumen roofing, custom steel pavers, and fireproof materials meeting strict municipal building code requirements.
Solutions
We collaborated closely with multiple subcontractors to integrate landscape elements, custom wood features, and architectural details like an eyebrow window and metal sunscreen shade. Our approach prioritized water management, utilizing custom steel supports, Brazilian wood with specialized staining, and carefully designed flashings that tied seamlessly into the building’s existing structure.
