Texas Department of Criminal Justice

Background

Schulte Roofing undertook a critical 29,000-square-foot partial re-roofing project atop the 28-story TXDCJ building in downtown Houston, addressing extensive existing roof damage and persistent leakage issues. The complex urban environment presented significant logistical challenges that demanded innovative problem-solving and precise execution.

Challenges

We conducted a comprehensive thermal scan to identify and remove high-moisture areas, ensuring a sound foundation for the new single-ply membrane overlay. The project’s urban setting created unique obstacles, including limited material staging space, complex elevator access, and challenging material delivery logistics in the dense downtown environment.

To mitigate these challenges, our team implemented a strategic approach of off-hours material loading and unloading between 5-7 AM and 5-7 PM. We carefully navigated the roof’s intricate mechanical, electrical, and plumbing penetrations while managing material deliveries in small, carefully coordinated quantities to overcome space constraints.

Solutions

The successful completion of this project demonstrated our ability to execute complex roofing renovations in challenging urban environments. Our team’s adaptability, precise planning, and technical expertise ensured a high-quality installation that addressed the building’s critical roofing needs while minimizing disruption to the facility’s daily operations.
