- Hip – In areas that are prone to hurricanes, this type of structure is ideal for residences because it provides better bracing and has less of a tendency to be violently ripped off by high winds in comparison to the gable style. It does not have flat sides but sloped sides that are joined at the walls of the house. Because it can secure a building from the forces of nature causes this design to require a frequent maintenance schedule.
- Gambrel – Also known as a barn roof, this structure is commonly seen on buildings that are located on farms. Like the mansard type, it has two distinguishable slopes that are symmetrical on both sides. There are two sides where the lower slope is steeper when compared to the upper slope. Additional features can be added such as dormers to provide good lighting and head space for effective usage.
- Flat – Not really as flat as might be imagined, this version has a low slope to help shed rain water and is much more accessible and safe. It is the most economical type because fewer materials are required. The problem with a flat roof is water pooling which can result in leaks if water stands for a long period of time. It is ideal for homes located in dryer climates and not good in rainy or snowy locations.
- Shed – Recognized as a simple structure with a single roof that slopes down on one side, it can stand alone or be placed as an additional structure against an existing building. It is ideal for workshops and storage sheds or as a garage covering.
- Saltbox – This is a long-pitched asymmetrical building covering with one short and one long side that slopes down to the back. It is very commonly seen on a conventional colonial architectural style home and has two stories in the front and only one story in the back.
